Davis

Life on Davis station

Because ANARE don't employ cleaners your daily duties on the station would include:

  • wash, clean and stack utensils and crockery
  • wipe surfaces, sweep and mop floor
  • replenish food and beverages
  • set tables
  • assist in the preparation of meals and smoko breaks
  • launder linen
  • wash and wet-vaq tiled areas in kitchen
  • History

The first sighting of the land where the Davis station now stands was in 1935 By Norwegian whaler Captain Klarius

Mikkelsen from the vessel Thorshaven. On January 20th with his wife and 7 other crew members he landed in a small bay

now known as Tryne island. His wife Mrs Mikkelsen was the first woman to ever set foot on this amazing and beautiful

    Mawson

Mawson station was placed on the area of Mac Robertson land that was first named and sighted

on the 1st day of the year 1930. (1/1/1930)The land wasn't actually landed on until Sir Douglas Mawson landed there. It was

named this after Macpherson Robertson who was a keen supporter of Australia's role in Antarctica. The area was later

photographed in "Operation Highjump" for landing purposes for airplanes this mission was performed in 1953. The

surrounding area including mountains and coast line are named after famous Australian explorers and researchers.

The main reason the Mawson station exists is for research in the following areas:

Medical Science, Meteorology, Geophysics, Clean air monitoring, Adelie penguin monitoring and research, Emperor penguin population assessment, Human impact studies, Cosmic Ray research and Atmospheric and Space Physics.
